Political Conflict
2 Internal Political Conflicts:
- In 2011, Egypt called for political reform as part of the larger Arab Spring movement.
- The early months of 2013 were characterized by high political and social tension. In January, more than fifty people were killed during several days of violent street protests. On June 30, mass demonstrations against President Morsi began, which ultimately led to his removal as president in the first week of July. Protests continued throughout the month, with some clashes between different groups turning violent. Violent conflict between the military and protesters who supported Morsi erupted in several urban areas in August, resulting in casualties. Meanwhile, the international community has pushed for stability in the country and urged the country’s different factions to abstain from violence.” ("Egypt." Global Peacebuilding Center. N.p., n.d. - “Following territorial wars with Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973, Egyptian President Sadat embarked on a path toward peaceful negotiation, traveling to Israel in 1977 and then signing the Camp David accords and the Egypt-Israel peace treaty in 1979.” ("Egypt."
